Challah bread
Shabbat is a time for rest, reflection, and gathering with loved ones, and nothing brings people together quite like the aroma of freshly baked challah. This beautifully braided bread is a staple of Shabbat meals, symbolizing joy and the bounty of the week. If you're looking to make your Shabbat extra special tonight, here's a simple guide to creating your own homemade challah.
Ingredients:
1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
1 cup warm water
1/4 cup honey
3 large eggs
1/4 cup vegetable oil
4-5 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1 egg (for egg wash)
Poppy or sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions:
Activate the Yeast: In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Add a teaspoon of honey and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, until the mixture becomes frothy.
Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and add the remaining honey, oil, and salt. Mix well.
Combine and Knead: Add the egg mixture to the yeast mixture and stir to combine. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
Shape the Challah: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into three equal parts. Roll each part into a long rope and braid them together. Tuck the ends underneath to create a neat loaf.
Second Rise: Place the braided loaf on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
Preheat and Prep: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Beat an egg and brush it over the risen challah for a glossy finish. Sprinkle with poppy or sesame seeds if desired.
Bake: Bake the challah for 25-30 minutes, or until it is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Let it cool on a wire rack.
Happy Shabbat!
Enjoy the fruits of your labor with loved ones around the table. The rich, slightly sweet flavor of challah is the perfect way to usher in the peace and joy of Shabbat. Wishing you a restful and happy Shabbat!
